What is Reiki, and Where Does it Come From?
Reiki is an energy healing modality that has been in existence since 1922 when it was developed by Japanese Buddhist monk, Dr. Mikao Usui. Reiki is not a type of religion, however, it does correlate with the five principles of Buddhism, which include:
Do not be angry
Do not worry
Work with diligence
Be kind to people
As a result, Reiki sessions are well known for helping to dispel anger, relieve worry, increase gratitude and mental focus, and improve the inner calm and compassion that leads us to be kinder and more patient with others.
The foundation of Reiki is based on the concept that life is sustained by an unseen vital force or life force energy that flows through the body -- what the Japanese call ki, and what may be more familiar by the Chinese term chi or qi. Those who advocate for Reiki healing believe that when one's ki or life force energy is low, illnesses, stress, and depression are more likely to take place in the body.
Reiki healing sessions can increase the body’s vital force to higher levels, making one feel more at peace and in a happier place.
Reiki promotes relaxation and healing of the mind, body, emotions, and spirit through a type of “laying on of hands” or palm healing. During a healing session, a trained Reiki Master channels universal life force energy, also called chi or qi, through the palms. This could include touching, tapping, and rubbing with the hands.
Some benefits of Reiki healing are:
Increased deep relaxation
Promotion of stress reduction
Assistance with addictions recovery
Help with curing of injuries
Help with headaches and migraines
Support the immune system
Acceleration of healing processes
There are several forms of Reiki healing, with Usui being perhaps the most well know. I received my training from Healing Today, an organization that has been around since 1999 teaching principles of Reiki based on the practices of Dr. Usui. I have had intense training at all 3 levels of Reiki, receiving attunement as a Reiki Master. I am able to not only see persons in my local office for Reiki healing, but I am also able to provide Reiki sessions that are just as effective at a distance, to include across the United States and in other countries.
